'Funakoshi' There is no information available on this garden but has been highly recommended through 'channels'. Nunwell House' The house, which is beautifully furnished, dates from1522 with various later additions. It is now the home of the Aylmer family. Five acres of tranquil gardens, including a walled garden, surround the house within a ten acre site with views over the Solent. Osborn House. The original house and estate was purchased by Queen Victoria in 1845 which was then demolished and the new house built on the site with two Italianate towers affording views over the island and the Solent. The interior abounds with opulent architectural features, designs and furnishings. Prince Albert helped design the formal Italianate terrace and gardens which complement the house. The grounds also contain a summer house, museum, miniature fort and barracks and Swiss cottage. CrabCottage 1¼ acres of gravelly soil with glorious views over Newton creek and the Solent. Wildflower meadow, woodland walk, lily pond, walled garden, mixed boarders and sunken garden with pavilion and many exotic plants. Ventnor Botanic Gardens lies in the so-called 'undercliff' which provides a remarkable microclimate suitable for growing many exotic plants unprotected out of doors . Crookley Pool, Hampshire. We visit this garden on the way back from the Isle of Wight. Here the plants decide where they want to grow. Romneya elbow valerian aside, evening primrose obstruct the paths and steps. Salvias, justica and passion flowers riot quietly with tomatoes in the greenhouse

There are innumerable flower beds, orchards with over 1000 varieties of soft, bush, cane or top fruit, model gardens, lakes, streams, rockery and bog gardens, - and more! Plants for sale, souvenir and book shop, large cafeteria and restaurant. You won't see it all in a day but it's worth a try. *Tickets and / or information from Clive Emberson. Tel. 01245 381704
