T hese are the competions for this year mostly the same, but one new one which is grow a dahlia in a pot for the autumn show, please have a go at this.
Best Front Garden

It is not necessary to enter formally for this competition.  Gardens may be nominated by anyone. During the spring and early summer a short list will be drawn up by the Committee.  Judging will take place during  mid- summer.  The winner receives an engraved glass rose bowl presented jointly by the Society and the Parish Council     

Potato Competition

This competition is open to anyone, adult or child. All you need to do is to grow one potato tuber in a container. In late summer the produce will be officially 'dug up' and weighed. The person with the heaviest yield wins a £10 prize.  But even better, you will have lovely fresh potatoes and we all know how good they taste.  The tubers and containers may be obtained in March from Neville Bright or from Trina Butcher or at the Spring Show (31st March).  A charge of £1 will be made to cover the cost of the tubers and containers.  An information sheet will also be supplied at the time of purchase

Dahlia Competition

£10 PRIZE SPONSORED BY THE SOCIETY

Cuttings will be available at the Spring plant sale, grow on in a pot and it will be ready for the Autumn Show. Growing hints will be supplied with the cutting when it is bought.

Spring Bulb Competition

£10  PRIZE  SPONSORED  BY  THE  SOCIETY

Bulbs will be available at the Autumn Plant Sale and at the Autumn Show. They should be planted up in a container not exceeding 30cm (approx.12ins) diameter and be in flower for the Spring Show NEXT YEAR (2013).
Hints on cultivation. Plant the bulbs as soon as you have them. Place the containers in a shaded<frost free place preferably plunged in a frame or a cold frame. About 12 weeks before the show bring the container into the greenhouse but don¡¯t let the temp rise above 13¢ªc(55¢ªf). The plants should be in full flower for the show.

Annual Pumpkin Competition

AT  THE  A.G.M.  THURSDAY  10th   NOVEMBER
Plant your seed from mid April to the end of May. If insect pollination does not occur then hand pollination will be necessary. When the fruit is set, choose one and remove all the others. Feed regularly and water copiously. You to could have a monster in your back garden. The heaviest pumpkin wins the cup.

Winner 2011 Mr Hhedley Janes. Pumpkin weight. 61lbs.

Best Allotment Competition

This competition will be held again in 2012. Judging is arranged by the Allotment Association.  The 'old' and 'new' sites are judged separately and the two trophies will be presented to the winners at the Horticultural Society's Autumn Show.
